The country house which is the only Welsh winner of the AA B&B awards

A Denbighshire B&B has emerged from the gloomy lockdown to become the only Welsh winner at this year’s AA Bed & Breakfast Awards.

Firgrove Country House in Llanfwrog, Ruthin, won the AA Guest Accommodation of the Year award for Wales.

The Grade II listed Georgian house is said to offer hotel quality but without the prices, and has rave reviews on Tripadvisor.

It is set in a hectare and a half of gardens overlooking the Clwyd Valley and the Clwydian Range.

Co-owner Anna Meadway said the award was a “nice surprise”.

“It’s a big boost after the last 18 months, with Covid and the lockdowns,” she said.

“We’re obviously doing something right, I think.

“As businesses now begin to return to some form of normalcy, this award will only help promote Firgrove but also the beautiful town of Ruthin and the surrounding countryside of the Clwyd Valley.

“It’s nice to have guests. We’re not at full throttle yet, but next year we hope.

“It can only help.”

Firgrove Country House has a multitude of period features

Firgrove has two double bedrooms in the main house, each with four poster beds, and an independent cottage suite.

Each has a private bathroom and is individually furnished.

Nearby are woods which, according to Firgrove, were “once occupied by Owain Glyndwr’s cavalry waiting to attack and capture Ruthin on September 20, 1400”.

Prices range from £ 80 to £ 125 per night.

The AA inspector described the Denbighshire property as ‘well proportioned’ with ‘quality decor’ and ‘immaculate gardens’.

Guests at the Firgrove can enjoy award-winning meals, as the B&B holds the AA Award for breakfast and dinner in recognition of the quality of the food served for breakfast and dinner. It is the only B&B in Wales to hold this award.

Dinner is available with 48 hours notice and the menu includes homemade gravadlax, a simmered local shoulder of lamb, and a poached pear with a sweet port sauce.

Police stopped 2,500 cars in the area last week, a visitor to Wigan was sent to pack his bags after saying he wanted to visit Talacre Lighthouse.
