The award-winning, world-class gastropub in the heart of a quiet Somerset hamlet

Here in Somerset we are blessed with some of the best country pubs in England.

Although we all love our area, many of our pubs are now also world class restaurants.

We are no longer happy to have third rate food in our pubs, our local cuisine in Somerset is now celebrated the world over, our produce first class, fish from nearby coasts and meat from our sumptuous farms .

English cuisine is now a party and the West Country has some of the best local organic produce in the country.

Award-winning chef Philip Verden ensures all food is fresh and locally sourced

One such pub is the wonderfully named Lord Poulett Arms in the village of Hinton St George, a few miles from Crewkerne, near the Lyme Regis coast and the Jurassic Coast.

Owner Abbie is there most of the time, making sure the local food, beers and wines are good enough for her devotees.

This relaxed pub is the perfect environment for long lunches and sumptuous dinners.

The Lord Poulett offers appetizing dishes on the menu

Chef Philip Verden and his team cook the best of seasonal produce around Lord Poulet, meat and game from local farms, fish landed daily on the south coast and fresh leaves picked a few steps from the Lord Poulet vegetable garden .

The bar is also well stocked with delicious snacks throughout the day.

Named after the original owner of the large estate and country house in the village, the 16th century pub has a pleasant atmosphere and is ideal for special occasions.

Just outside Crewkerne, it is not far from Lyme Regis and other Jurassic Coast resorts.

Part of the Beckford Group, who also own The Talbot in Mells, Somerset, The Beckford Arms in Wiltshire and The Bath Arms in Longleat, this is a very high class pub in a picture postcard English village.

Some criticize the advance of the gastropub in our departments, but this group always makes room for locals too, and there is always room for a pint at lunchtime or after work.

If you fancy making it extra special, there are six gloriously decorated rooms with breakfast included, but you’ll need to be quick as they book up quickly.

The Lord Poulett’s rooms have a real country inn feel

Beckford does a very good job of this type of upscale pub and small hotel.

Their decor is always elegant, and you are always assured of good service and hospitality, with truly first class food.
