Its importance is even more important today
SoCal’s Museum of Tolerance houses interactive exhibits that shed new light on the Holocaust tragedy, and why it should be remembered.
The Museum of Tolerance was founded to educate and enlighten visitors about the Holocaust. The Museum was the vision of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The center was named after Simon Wiesenthal, known to be a Nazi hunter. Leaders and representatives of the Center and of the best museums in the world began discussing ways to promote understanding and tolerance in the late 1980s. The importance of founding the Museum of Tolerance became even more important when the recent curiosity has been aroused by the Holocaust and its events.
What is the Museum of Tolerance?
The Museum of Tolerance is not like traditional museums where there are exhibits of artifacts as well as documents. The aim of the Museum of Tolerance was not to focus on the past but to remind visitors to take action and prevent hatred. The Museum’s message is positive. The goal of the Museum is to prevent history from repeating itself and to deny an unnatural hatred. The goal of the museum is to challenge all races and groups of people to examine their assumptions and be responsible for enacting change.
The Museum of Tolerance opened in February 1993. The Museum has received praise from national and international leaders. The Museum has been recognized as an extraordinary museum. It has become a destination for visitors to explore in Southern California.
The museum has more than 250,000 people who visit the Museum of Tolerance every year. There is a wide range of visitors, from students to businesses, law enforcement, educators and professionals.
Anne Frank exhibition
Anne Frank is an exhibition on the life of Anne Frank. The exhibition comes to life through unique documents, photographs and rare objects. Visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to see a replica of his diary as well as other samples of his writings. The exhibit highlights facts about her time spent in hiding and the events that ultimately led to her arrest. The exhibit contains audio testimonials from people who knew her. This exhibition offers visitors the chance to experience Anne Frank’s story like never before.
The Holocaust exhibit is a 70-minute emotional presentation with sound and light. Visitors are transported to the 1920s to 1945 to witness the events of Nazi Europe during World War II. Visitors to the Holocaust exhibit receive a passport card that describes the story of a child affected by the Holocaust. Each passport card is different for each visitor and as visitors move through the exhibit the passport is updated. At the end of the exhibition, the fate of the passport child is revealed.
The Social Lab is the place where visitors to the Museum are confronted with the problems of intolerance in everyday life. One experience that visitors will have is the experience of the point of view. The exhibition is a 4-sided glass cube that presents a perspective of a situation facing society. These scenarios can be homelessness, bullying, LGBTQ +, and law enforcement issues. The Social Lab takes daily scenarios and shows different perspectives of that scenario. There are other experiences and exhibits in The Social Lab such as The Forum and The Civil Rights Exhibit.
