Historic Ingalls building transformed into a city center hotel
CINCINNATI (WXIX) – The historic Ingalls downtown building is now open as the Courtyard Marriott after a $ 25 million multi-year renovation.
Built in 1903, the Ingalls Building was the world’s first skyscraper with concrete steel reinforcements.
Because the building is a historic monument, the renovation was anything but typical.
“We bought the building and completely emptied it to the studs and completely re-energized and revived the building,” said Vernon Burchett, general manager of Courtyard Marriott.
The renovations started in 2019.
There was a hiatus due to the pandemic, but the hotel was open to guests in July. The construction company HGC Construction documented the project.
“The simple architectural details that are here, they are original,” says Burchett. “We wanted to make sure we could get back what we could, and what we couldn’t, we would bring people in to fix things like that. We had to do some extra work to make sure it looks like it was before. “
In the basement of the hotel is the fitness center. It is in the old bank safe, with the safe door still intact.
Burchett says the hotel is full every weekend and with the return of business travel they expect it to start filling up soon during the week.
He says their neighbors like the concert halls, the Great American Ballpark and the Paul Brown Stadium have all helped bring the downtown area back to life.
